Vernon Hills, Illinois is a suburb located north of Chicago in Lake County. It was founded by Richard Freese, Ron Freese, and Jim Carswell and began with the establishment of a 200-acre farm in 1857. In 1958, the village officially incorporated with 123 residents and 125 houses in a single subdivision. During those times the village and police department were run out of a local motel and it was that way until 1971. By 1980 the population had grown to almost 10,000 people and by 2000 it had surpassed 20,000.
As of 2020, according to the census the population was 26,850. Vernon Hills is 7.94 square miles with 7.74 square miles being land and 0.20 square miles being water.
