About McHenry, Illinois
McHenry, Illinois was founded on May 10, 1836 and was named for William McHenry. It was incorporated into a village in 1872. It has a total area of 15.175 square miles with 14.74 square miles being land and 0.435 square miles being water. It lies within the Fox River Valley and the downtown area is situated on that river. That is how it earned the nickname, "The Heart of the Fox River." In the middle of summer, McHenry is home to Fiesta days which is a ten-day festival that includes parades, music, car shows, great food, and more.
According to the 2020 census, the population was 27,135. It was once the county seat of McHenry County which at one time included the adjoining Lake County. The elevation of McHenry is 797 feet above sea level and it is surrounded by natural lakes, streams, gravel banks, grassy moraine hills, and shallow nutrient-rich peat bogs. It is also home to Moraine Hills State Park which has many miles of great hiking trails.
