About Libertyville, Illinois
Libertyville, Illinois is a northern suburb of Chicago located in Lake County on the Des Plaines River and 7 miles from Lake Michigan. The history of modern Libertyville began in the early 1830's when George Vardin and his family arrived to the area and then a small settlement developed. The settlement was known as Vardin's Grove. During the celebrations that marked the 60th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence the community voted to name itself Independence Grove. When they went to open a post office, they discovered that there was already an Independence Grove in the state so on April 16, 1837 they changed the name again to Libertyville. Two years later, the town's name changed again to Burlington when it became the county seat of Lake County. When the county seat moved in 1841, they changed the name back to Libertyville and it has been that ever since.
According to the 2020 census, the population of Libertyville was 20,579. It is 9.16 square miles with 8.81 square miles being land and 0.35 square miles being water. It sits at an elevation of 699 feet. In 2007, CNN named Libertyville the 52nd best place to live in the entire U.S. In 2013, CNN Travel named Libertyville as one of America's best small town comebacks.
