About Elgin, Illinois
Elgin, Illinois was founded in 1835 and incorporated into a city on April 24, 1854. It is located in Kane County and Cook County with a total area of 38.6 square miles, of which 38.03 is square miles is land and 0.57 square miles is water. As of the 2020 census, there were 114,797 people living in Elgin. Elgin is one of the fastest growing cities in Illinois. In 2013, Elgin ranked 1st in the Chicago metro area in the new home starts and ranked second in new home closings. In the 1990's Elgin became one of the few cities in northern Illinois to host a riverboat casino called the Grand Victoria Casino. As of 2005, it drew four million people annually and was the fifth most popular tourist attraction in the whole state.
Elgin has a long tradition of invention and education and is home to the Elgin Academy. The Elgin Academy is the oldest coeducational, non-sectarian college preparatory school west of the Allegheny Mountains. Elgin High School boasts, a Nobel Prize winner, a Pulitzer Prize winner, five Navy admirals, a Tony Award winner, two Acadamy Award-winning producers, Olympic athletes and more.
