Des Plaines, Illinois is a growing, diverse community. It was first incorporated by it's current name in 1869. It is named for the Des Plaines River which flows through it. The name Des Plaines comes from 18th-century French referencing the American Sycamore. Ray Kroc, who is credited with the global expansion of McDonald's, opened his first McDonald's franchise there in 1955 and later purchased the company in 1961. One fun fact is that the majority of the 1985 film, The Breakfast Club was filmed at the (now-defunct) Maine North High School located in unincorporated Des Plaines.
Per the 2020 census, Des Plaines had a population of 60,675 people. It spans 14.38 square miles of which 14.24 square miles is land and 0.15 square miles is water.
