Located 45 miles northwest of Chicago in McHenry County, Crystal Lake was named after a lake 1.6 miles southwest of the city's downtown. It is currently the largest city in McHenry county with (as of 2020) a population of 40,269 people. The City of Crystal Lake traces it's origins to two separate communities that were established in the 1800's and were generally known as Nunda and Crystal Lake. Crystal Lake was first known as Crystal Ville, however, the name changed to Crystal Lake sometime before 1840. In 1908 Nunda changed it's name to North Crystal Lake and in 1914 North Crystal Lake was annexed to the Village of Crystal Lake and a consolidated city government was established. For the past 20 years, the history of Crystal Lake has consisted mainly of the growing suburban subdivisions.
Crystal Lake is 19.53 square miles of which 18.92 square miles is land and 0.61 square miles is water. It sits at an elevation of 942 feet.
